Qatar is a country on the southwestern side of the Arabian Gulf. And what many military personnel don't know is that there are soldiers stationed there. Soldiers in Qatar get the best of both worlds. On the installation, Camp As Sayliyah, the soldiers have many of the same amenities that Camp Doha soldiers have. Meanwhile, in Doha, the main city off post, soldiers can do all of the same things that are available in Kuwait City, plus more, with a little less crowding.
Although Qatar is one of the safest countries on the planet, security for the Doha Asian Games will be planned and executed to the highest standards, without infringing on people's freedom. The State of Qatar has gained vast experience and a great reputation for providing security to major international, continental and regional events held in the country and this knowledge shall be carried forth towards ensuring Doha 2006 is a secure and safe environment.
Qatar has a rich and vibrant history – a history that can be traced back as far as 4000 BC. Throughout the centuries, the fishing and pearling trades have established Qatar as an important port in the Gulf. With the expansion and growth of its oil and gas industry, the port and the country maintain their international importance.
In 1991 Qatar began production of gas from its vast North Field. As part of the second phase of development of the North Field, the country built a liquefied natural gas (LNG) production and export facility at Raʾs Laffan, which began exports in 1996. The country's modern physical infrastructure includes excellent roads linking Qatar with the other Gulf states, an international airport, and a large, modern port at Doha. Attempts have been made to diversify the economy by building cement plants and flour mills, and expanding the shrimping industry. Modern techniques in agriculture have made possible vegetable and chicken production sufficient to meet an increasing local demand.

The State of Qatar is situated halfway along the west coast of the Persian Gulf, on the eastern side of the Arabian peninsula. The present population is estimated at 600,000 inhabitants most of whom reside in Doha, the capital city. It is a Peninsula that extends northward covering an area of 11,437 sq. km. as well as a number of islands in the coastal waters of the peninsula. The terrain is generally flat. However, there are some hills and sand dunes which reach an altitude of 40 metres above sea level in the areas of Dukhan and Jebel Fuwairit in the western and northern parts of the country and Khor Al-Udeid in the south.
In the 20th century, the main aim of Qatar was to obtain independence. This became possible after oil was found in the Western City of Dukhan in 1935. More and more the country evolved from a nomad structure to a settled structure and more and more the country and its citizens became wealthy. It lasted until 1971 when Qatar became independent and from that date onward the development of sport, physical education, physical recreation and fitness boomed.
