Pythagoras: School
built 633 days ago
[T]here are three volumes extant written by Pythagoras. One on Education; one on Politics; and one on Natural Philosophy. But the treatise which is now extant under the name of Pythagoras is the work of Lysis, of Tarentum, a philosopher of the Pythagorean School, who fled to Thebes, and became the master of Epaminondas. And Heraclides, the son of Sarapion, in his Abridgment of Sotion, says that he wrote a poem in epic verse on the Universe; and besides that a sacred poem, which begins ...:
"Ancient tradition makes Pythagoras the embodiment of the wise man: a traveller, a scientist, a guru, an astronomer and cosmologist, a mathematician, a politician. How much of the legend is true and can the historical Pythagoras be reconstructed? In an unusually lucid and methodical book, Christoph Riedweg tackles all the aspects of the traditions about this legendary wise man. He shows that the key to understanding Pythagoras is his uniquely comprehensive way of structuring reality: a theory of the cosmos entails both science and religious doctrine, a way of life and a political attitude. This book is an excellent introduction to the study of Pythagoras and the philosophical school of the Pythagoreans."—Nanno Marinatos, University of Illinois at Chicago
The study of geometry, music, and astronomy was considered essential to a rational understanding of God, man, or Nature, and no one could accompany Pythagoras as a disciple who was not thoroughly familiar with these sciences. Many came seeking admission to his school. Each applicant was tested on these three subjects, and if found ignorant, was summarily dismissed.
"Christoph Riedweg fully treats the archaic school or cult founded by Pythagoras. He gives a rich picture of Pythagoras as a figure of legend, with abundant details from the Neoplatonist 'Lives' of Pythagoras, including many supernatural exploits and edifying stories."—Charles H. Kahn, author of Pythagoras and the Pythagoreans
When Pythagoras settled in Crotona in 530 BC, he established his famous school -said to be the creator of mathematics as a science. This movement of his, known as the Pythagoreans, was almost like a religion were the numbers were regarded as gods.
