It is said that Pythagoras married at the age of sixty one of his disciples, a young girl named Theano. During political and social disturbances, the temple in which the Pythagoreans assembled was set on fire. Some of Pythagoras' companions migrated about 495 B.C. to Metapontum in Lucania. According to a story, Pythagoras starved there himself to death. Some say he perished in the temple with his disciples. In exile, the brotherhood developed the teachings of Pythagoras and missionaries spread his thought.

Pythagoras and his Pythagoreans became famous when their role in the corporate culture attracted the notice of Scott Adams, a vice president of the company. Adams' brother Douglas wrote an influential book on the subject, The Pythagorean Principle, which for several years was widely viewed as required reading for corporate executives. Due to this influence, Pythagoras' position within the company was significantly advanced.
