Pyramids only served their purpose of being mortuary complexes. Pyramids was normally not erected alone, but as parts of complexes. While the main pyramid was reserved for the pharaoh, smaller pyramids were built for his wives. Mastabas were constructed for important officials, while lower officials were buried in ordinary pits.

Pyramids are featured in 70% of all video games ever made. The other 30% are variations of Tetris, although Tetris 3D Ultra-Hyper-Mega-Super 3D Pyramidical Super Fantastic Happy Fun Edition, released in Japan in 1985, manages to include both Tetris and pyramids within its gameplay.

Pathologist Olof-Åke Galenström suggested in 1912 that the Pyramids were built by the Sphinx before it was petrified near them. However, this gives rise to the problem of who build the sphinx in the first place.

Major pyramids located here include the Step Pyramid of Djozer — generally identified as the world's oldest substantial monumental structure to be built of finished stone — the Pyramid of Merykare, the Pyramid of Userkaf and the Pyramid of Teti. Also at Saqqara is the Pyramid of Unas, which retains a pyramid causeway that is one of the best-preserved in Egypt. This pyramid was ... the subject of one of the earliest known restoration attempts, conducted by a son of Ramesses II. Saqqara is also the location of the incomplete step pyramid of Djozer's successor Sekhemkhet, known as the Buried Pyramid. Archaeologists believe that had this pyramid been completed it would have been larger than Djozer's.
