Purple Rain - Blu-ray - Widescreen Purple Rain, the first starring film for Prince, is the story of an arrogant, young black singer, born and raised in Minneapolis, who reaches the pinnacle of stardom. The dramatic complications include "The Kid's" (Prince) miserable home life, where he suffers the brutalities of his father (well played by Clarence Williams III) and the youth's efforts to win the love of the beautiful Apollonia. Despite the misogynistic undercurrents in Purple Rain, the film's biggest fans were young women. Gorgeously photographed by Donald Thorin, Purple Rain is essentially a glorified music video, highlighted by a catalogue of Prince's hits, including I Would Die 4 U, When Doves Cry and Let's Go Crazy; the score deservedly won an Academy Award and a Grammy. Loosely based on aspects of Prince's life, ``Purple Rain'' is about a Minneapolis musician called ``the Kid,'' who wants to make a mark on the national scene. But emotional problems are holding him back. They surface when he tries to get close to his new girlfriend, Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero), a young singer.

A group of six Purple Rain 93 players formed a team to play the 2007 Kick It 3v3 series. Devin, Mady, Heather, Karoline, Vic, and Taylor played under the name of Triple Threat in the Nashville sub-regional taking champion honors winning 4 games for the weekend and losing only one game. They played teams from Birmingham AL, Chattanooga TN, Nashville TN, and Lexington KY to take champion honors scoring 35 goals while allowing 11 goals. Last year, the Triple Threat team competed in all levels of the Kick It 3v3 Series and earning National 4th place honors in Orlando. The girls are off to a great start in this year's series! The next step is the Regional tournament in Clarksville TN at the end of July....then off to Orlando in January!
As rock movies go, Purple Rain has dated extremely well. For a start, the music remains stunning, a deliberate hybrid of crunching funk and rock riffs topped off with one of the finest lighters-aloft anthems of all time, 'Purple Rain'. The opening sequence, cut to an extended version of 'Let's Go Crazy', sees aspiring singer Apollonia (Kotero) arrive in Minneapolis in search of work. Drawn to the First Avenue club, she arrives just in time to see The Kid (Prince) rip-up a squall on the guitar. Love at first sight. The rival for her affections and the audience, Morris (Day) is up next with his sharp zoot-suited funk band The Time, a straightforward party outfit untroubled by the kind of personal turmoil that afflicts the more artistic Kid.
