PURPLE RAIN remains to the end a violent, misogynist adolescent male fantasy. Though it benefits visually from its stylistic indebtedness to music video, PURPLE RAIN suffers dearly for its refusal to ferret out the violence and sexism from the patriarchal music-video "narrative" formula. As a result, the film is both a vanguard movie musical and a sociopathic parable. Magnoli appears to be clever enough to link a new visual style to a dying genre, but at the same time he is too shallow to couple stylistic innovation with social conscience. Though the film displays a non-bourgeois camera style, it clings to the most repressive of bourgeois fables.

'Purple Rain' has transcended all barriers to emerge as more than a movie, more than an album -- it's a snapshot of a phenomenal moment in pop culture history. Every single song is a classic, and if the film itself has long become overshadowed by the mystique that is Prince, it still holds up as blistering combination of live performance, music video aesthetic and autobiography.

The film is tied into the album of the same name, which spawned three chart-topping singles: the opening number "Let's Go Crazy", "Purple Rain", and "When Doves Cry." The movie won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. Much of the movie's cinematography, by Donald Thorin, is closer to that of 1980s music videos than a conventional film.
