In the "final festival" in these films, the embracing celebrations at the end of TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, FOOTLOOSE and PURPLE RAIN, closure is imposed with enthusiasm and conviction. One is asked to have faith in artificial and incomplete solutions and to accept inconsistencies and inequities in the name of sacred values like the family, the church, and the "self-made-man" Horatio Alger mythology. Obviously such endings are ultimately religious in nature.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film's release, Warner has remixed and remastered Purple Rain, releasing it in a widescreen format for the first time with a disc's worth of bonus material. The end result is maddeningly inconsistent—fitting for a film about an artist whose career can be described in the same terms.

In the movie Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the characters Jay and Silent Bob are presented as being fans of The Time, who appeared in Purple Rain. The Time make an appearance at the end of the film, performing Jungle Love, and Jay and Silent Bob join them on stage. Writer and Director Kevin Smith has stated that he is a Prince fan, and once collaborated briefly on a documentary with Prince, which eventually fell through and was never released.
