Punk Fashion: Styles
built 658 days ago
A classic punk fashion look might consist of: a pair of combat boot s, Doc Martens boots, old tattered converse shoes, tapered jeans or tight leather pants worn with a ripped T-shirt and silver bracelets. Hair was cropped and deliberately made to look messy, in reaction to the typical long smooth hair of the 60s and early 70s. It was ... often dyed brilliant unnatural colors. Other accoutrements worn by punks often included: bondage trousers , ripped fishnets , spikes, safety pins as body piercings, and pants with leopard patterns. Also often worn would be leather motorcycle jackets with words, band names and symbols written on them with paint markers. It is also a common punk style to wear a jean jacket or vest adorned with band patches, studs, spikes, safety pins, writing, or any combination of the above.
By the 1980’s punk fashion had evolved completely, no longer worn just to shock but to function as well. Chuck Taylors and combat boots were often paired with thrift store T’s, leather jackets and torn jeans. Punks ... showed that rebellious “do it yourself” attitude by writing band names and slogans on their T-shirts with marker. Hair during this time became even bolder. Mohawks, crew cuts, Liberty Spikes and shaven heads grew very popular, along with having extensive body piercings and tattoos. Chains, studded belts & chokers and bandanas were also adapted into this style, now known as Hardcore Punk.
The best example of horror punk fashion can be found in the band The Misfits. While looking somewhat similar to other late-1970s punk rock bands and fans, the band took a darker approach to its style. They wore items such as black clothing, skeleton costumes, skull face paint — and styled their hair into devilocks. Horror punk style is similar to goth and deathrock fashions, in that black is the predominant color, and that individuals often incorporate "sexy" items such as fishnet stockings, corsets and elaborate make-up for men and women. The use of occult and horror imagery is prevalent on T-shirts, buttons, patches and jewellery. Hair may be in mohawk form, teased out, or in the devilock style.

The punk subculture has produced a few fashion styles that are limited to very few individuals. One prominent example is the wearing of black military surplus clothing. This was practiced by bands such as T.S.O.L. and Crass. Other more obscure trends include the following:
