Pulitzer Prize: Pulitzer Prizes
built 655 days ago
The Pulitzer Prize is presently given in 14separate journalism categories, including Breaking News Reporting, Investigative Reporting, Explanatory Reporting, Beat Reporting, National Reporting, International Reporting, Feature Writing, Commentary, Criticism, Editorial Writing, Editorial Cartooning, Breaking News Photography, Feature Photography, and Public Service. The Prize is ... awarded in five "letters" categories: Biography or Autobiography, Fiction, General Non-Fiction, Poetry, and History (the latter being only category in which the winner need not be an American citizen). Finally, the Pulitzer is awarded in two "humanities" categories: Drama and Music.
The Pulitzer Prize for Music was first awarded in 1943. Joseph Pulitzer did not call for such a prize in his will, but had arranged for a music scholarship to be awarded each year. This was eventually converted into a full-fledged prize: "For a distinguished musical composition of significant dimension by an American that has had its first performance in the United States during the year.” Because of the requirement that the composition had its world premiere during the year of its award, the winning work had rarely been recorded and sometimes had received only one performance. [1] In 2004 the terms were modified to read: “For a distinguished musical composition by an American that has had its first performance or recording in the United States during the year.” [2]
A Pulitzer Prize once went to a pint-sized reporter who was small enough to crawl into a cave and interview Floyd Collins. Five Detroit Free Pressmen won the prize for reporting an American Legion parade. Ambidextrous Reuben Maury earned his Pulitzer for his "power to in fluence public opinion": a self-confessed hireling, he used to write isolationist editorials for the New York Daily News, interventionist editorials for Collier's.

Prulitzer For a picture to be chosen as a Pulitzer Prize photo, it must convey a powerful message that provokes a strong response from its viewers. What is that message? What happened to produce this photograph? Why did the public respond to the photograph? For this assignment you will explore the "behind the scenes" events of a Pulitzer Prize picture of your choice.
