Pugs
built 278 days ago
Pugs are lively little dogs... they are relatively active indoors and do well without a yard. This breed does love long walks, but proper water should always be provided as this breed is prone to breathing problems and tires quickly. This breed is excellent for an apartment environment. The Pug adapts well to many different environments, and will take as much exercise as provided. However, he has the tendency to overeat and become lazy, so exercise must be provided on a regular basis.

Pugs are one of several breeds that are more susceptible to Demodectic mange... known as Demodex.[12] This condition is caused by a weakened immune system, and it is a minor problem for many young Pugs. It is easily treatable. Some Pugs, however, are especially susceptible to the condition, and will present with a systemic form of the condition. This vulnerability is thought to be genetic, and good breeders will avoid breeding dogs who have had this condition.[12]

Pugs have round massive heads with short, square muzzles and deep wrinkles on their foreheads. Pugs have prominent eyes, straight legs with a tightly twisted tail over the haunches. They have a sleek soft coat that comes in apricot, black, fawn and silver with as dark a mask possible. From the top of the shoulder the pug stands between ten and eleven inches tall and weighs between fourteen to twenty-two pounds.

As Pugs have many wrinkles in their faces, owners must take special care to clean inside the creases, as irritation and infection can result from improper care.[11]. Pugs ... need to have their claws trimmed regularly and should only be bathed as needed, as this takes essential oils off the skin and fur.

Pugs were a favorite of the artist Hogarth, who included his pet Pug "Trump" in several of his works. From the sixteenth century, it became a fashionable adornment of the European Courts, reaching itspeak of popularity in Victorian times. He was a pet at Tibetan monasteries and later traveled to Japan. The Pug then came to Europe, where the endearing little dog was the pet of royalty in several countries and even became the official dog of the House of Orange in Holland. A Pug saved William, Prince of Orange's life by alerting him to the approaching Spaniards in 1572 at Hermingny. Napoleon's wife, Josephine, sent secret messages to her husband under the collar of her Pug while she was in prison.

The shape of the Pug’s face makes it susceptible to eye injuries and scratched corneas, as well as breathing difficulties. Pugs are ... susceptible to obesity, which makes exercise and a healthy diet important. The Pug has difficulty dissipating heat and should never be left outside in hot weather or locked in a car without air conditioning. The Pug is also prone to breed-specific Encephalitis known as (PDE). The Pug may ‘reverse sneeze’, which is a fit of gasping and snorting to remove fluid caught under the palate. This is not dangerous, but may frighten the Pug and its owner; it should be handled by talking to the Pug calmly and gently rubbing its throat.
