Puget Sound is an estuary, a semienclosed body of water in which salt water from the nearby Pacific Ocean mixes with fresh water runoff from the surrounding watershed. In general, the denser salt water sinks deeper and moves toward the land, while fresh water forms a surface layer that moves seaward.

EVERETT — Due to the work of Port of Everett marina staff, the port has earned a Clean Marina Leadership Designation from an organization that prides itself in the protection of the Puget Sound. The port received this honor from Clean Marina Washington, by conducting operations with the goal of protecting the environment, reducing and properly managing hazardous waste, educating boaters on clean boating practices, demonstrating innovative and e. Clean Marina Washington was created in 2005, and is an incentive-based certification program in which marinas assess their operations and implement improvements to better protect the environment. When they reach the qualification standards of Clean Marina Washington they earn the right to "fly the clean marina flag". The Clean Marina Washington Program is a partnership of Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, EnviroStars Cooperative, Northwest Marine Trade Association, Washington Sea Grant, Washington Department of Ecology, Washington Department of Natural Resources and Washington State Parks and Recreation.
