Pueblo Indians: El Paso
built 631 days ago
A people rich in culture, the 7,000-year-old Anasazi are the ancestors of today's Pueblo Indians. Their culture arose from even more ancient peoples in what is now the American Southwest. During their long history, the Anasazi evolved from a nomadic to a sedentary culture and existence. At first hunter-gatherers, in time the Anasazi began raising maize and other crops. They ... produced skillfully woven baskets. By a.d. 700, the Anasazi were building pueblos, or villages, along with extraordinary pottery marked by elaborate black-on-white designs.
The term Pueblo refers to an Indian culture that was unique to the Southwest, not to a particular tribe. Even though the Pueblo Indians shared many common elements, each Pueblo village had its own social order and religious practices. The early Pueblo period was a time of territorial expansion and cultural transition. Cotton cloth, aboveground houses, and improved pottery all came about during this period.
Many Pueblo Indian groups today live in the same communities they have occupied for hundreds of years. Many traditions have been lost; ... many have been retained. This guide focuses on an art form that continues to be widely practiced today, and on the ceremonies and beliefs that are important elements of contemporary Pueblo society.
