Puebla: Mexico State
built 280 days ago
Click Here for Puebla Picture Gallery Just a 15 minute cab ride from the center of Puebla is the town of Cholula. The original inhabitants of Cholula did not fare well under the Spanish; they supported their Aztec allies and ambushed Cortez on his march west towards Tenochtitlan (Modern-day Mexico City). The ambush failed and the leaders were executed; their temples and cities destroyed and replaced by Spanish churches. Everywhere you go in Cholula today, there seems to be a church. The largest pyramid in Mexico is here: although its top was leveled and a church built on it, too. The archaeological park is open to the public, and on a clear day, offers good views of the volcano.

Puebla is a large commercial state. Buildings and ruins from the colonial and pre-Columbian period may be found in the city of Cholula, where there is a site with pre-Columbian pyramids and a church built in the 18th century. Tourists enjoy visiting the cathedral and the El Parian marketplace, both in the capital, Puebla. Tourists ... enjoy sampling foods that originated in the state, including mole sauce (spicy chocolate sauce of Aztec origin) and chalupas. Tourists also are drawn to the mineral springs of Tehuacan and the thermal baths of Chignahuapan.
Puebla de Zaragoza has a wide range of accommodation options ranging from five star hotels to the downtown economy guesthouses. A few of these provide the luxury of individually decorated rooms, representing Mexico's past.
Despite its population of approximately three million, Puebla retains much of its provincial charm, particularly in the city center where many of the BUAP Facultades are located. Puebla remains a relatively safe city, particularly in comparison to some other destinations in Mexico, and at 7,000 feet above sea level, boasts a delightfully mild climate year-round. In addition, the city’s central location, about 60 miles southeast of Mexico City, makes it the perfect base to explore much of the country. Such important destinations as Oaxaca, Tlaxcala, and Veracruz are easily accessible by excellent and inexpensive bus companies. An extensive public bus system connects all parts of the city and neighboring towns. Puebla has its own international airport, although it is usually more practical and economical to use Mexico City’s Benito Juárez Airport, only two hours away by bus.

The community, established in 1531 as Puebla de los Ángeles, is one of the oldest European settlements in Mexico. In 1847, during the Mexican War, Puebla was occupied by U.S. troops. Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza (1829–62) defeated the French here on May 5, 1862, a victory commemorated in the national holiday of Cinco de Mayo; the French captured the city the following year and held it until 1867. In 1987 the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated Puebla’s historic city center as a World Heritage Site. The city has been hit hard by earthquakes, notably in 1973 and 1999. Pop. (2000 census, greater city) 2,220,236.

Puebla, which was founded ex nihilo in 1531, is situated about 100 km east of Mexico City, at the foot of the Popocatepetl volcano. It has preserved its great religious structures such as the 16th–17th-century cathedral and fine buildings like the old archbishop's palace, as well as a host of houses with walls covered in tiles (azulejos). The new aesthetic concepts resulting from the fusion of European and American styles were adopted locally and are peculiar to the Baroque district of Puebla.
