Public Transport: Vehicles

In the past, catching public transport in San Francisco meant standing on a street corner for 20 minutes wondering when the next bus would arrive, or if, indeed, it would arrive at all. Things began to change in 1999 when the city started experimenting with the NextBus automated tracking system. Until recently, the system was only of limited use as it worked only on a few routes. But now that it's expanding citywide, NextBus is taking much of the stress out of riding Muni. Here's how it works. Passengers can log on to NextBus' Web site, call Muni's information line, or check the LED displays at some bus stops to find out in real time when the next vehicle will be approaching a particular location.

While the above terms are generally taken to include rail and bus services, wider definitions might include scheduled airline services, ferries, taxicab services etc. — any system that transports members of the general public. A further restriction that is sometimes applied is that transit should occur in continuously shared vehicles, which would exclude taxis that are not shared-ride taxis.
The foundation for the collection of historical vehicles of Prague public transport was laid as early as in 1929 when a former horse tram car from 1886 was allocated for museum purposes. However, this car it appeared in Prague streets as a historical vehicle several years earlier - in 1925 on the occasion of celebrations of the 50th anniversary of opening horse tram in Prague. Tradition of documenting the history of Prague public transport is even older. In 1908 the then Technical Museum for the Czech Kingdom in cooperation with the Electric Company of the Royal Capital City of Prague laid foundations of a collection of components of overhead trolley system for Prague trams and three years later the Technical Museum acquired ... a historical bogie of a motor car of the electric line Praha-Libeň-Vysočany built in 1896 by a pioneer in use of electric drive in transport, a Czech inventor and electrical engineer, František Křižík. Currently, this bogie can be seen in the National Technical Museum in Prague.

Some urban transport systems forbid (the consumption of) food or drink when riding on public transport. Sometimes only types of food are forbidden with more risk of making the vehicles dirty, e.g. ice creams and French fries.
