Ptolemaic Dynasty
built 230 days ago
For the next three centuries the Ptolemaic Dynasty would hold sway over Egypt, surviving both family feuds and external conflicts while living an unusual combination of Hellenic and Egyptian life. And under them Alexandria grew mighty and prosperous, the center of an empire that extended around the coast of Syria to the Aegean Sea. In fact, if Alexandria had been any more prosperous, it might have replaced Rome as the center of the world, as Rome was neither as strategically located nor as culturally diverse. But all this is not to say that Alexandria was a city completely at peace with itself. With the large numbers of people and cultures coming through the city, it was inevitable that conflict would arise. Certainly racial tensions, by no means an invention of the twentieth century, played a strong part.

The Ptolemaic Dynasty was not "Egyptianized" as much as conover1234 likes to lie that they were. Their names were Greek, their bloodline was Greek, they practiced incest amongst each other because they were xenophobic and saw native Egyptians as inferior to them. The Ptolemies even made GREEK the official language because these Kings and Queens did not even bother to learn native Egyptian. Get your facts straight or open up a legit history book once in a while instead of comic books.

The identity of the person represented by the Head of a Man is unknown because the inscription is lost; ... he lived during the Ptolemaic dynasty, which was founded by one of Alexander the Great's generals. The man was likely an important leader, perhaps a priest or a general, and had himself portrayed with strength and self-assurance.

It was one of three such empires, the others being the Seleucid dynasty and Ptolemaic dynasty. The dynasty ended with the Roman domination of the area after the Battle of Pydna in 168 BC.

Ptolemy VII Neos Philopator was the seventh ruler of the Ptolemaic Dynasty. He was the son of Ptolemy VI Philometor and Cleopatra II. Upon Philometor's death, Cleopatra's son, who was about 16 years old and had been appointed co-ruler by his father earlier that year, became king under his mother's regency. Philopator's uncle Physcon (Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II) wanted to rule and a large number of supporters. He could not get Cleopatra out of the way, so he did the next best thing, he married her. Philopator was killed during the wedding feast.
