Since 1958, Sutter Center for Psychiatry has been the regional leader in providing psychiatric and mental health services to adults, adolescents and children. It is the only not-for-profit psychiatric hospital in the Sacramento region that in part of an integrative health care system. Sutter Center for Psychiatry is one of three campuses of Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, which is the foundation of Sutter Health, Northern California’s largest health care network.
Psychiatry is the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental health conditions. A person that carries out psychiatry is called a psychiatrist. Unlike other mental health professionals such as psychologists and counsellors, psychiatrists must be medically qualified doctors, who then specialise in psychiatry. This means that they can prescribe medication, as well as recommend other forms of treatment.
"TMS provides a well-tolerated treatment option to patients whose depression is otherwise treatment resistant," says John P. O'Reardon, MD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Penn, and lead study author. "Since TMS is administered via the scalp and therefore goes directly to the brain, it allows the patient to avoid bodily side effects such as weight gain, sedation and/or sexual function."
Psychiatry Psychiatry is placed in an historical context and the complex ethical and philosophical issues that are inherent to the practice of psychiatry are highlighted. The book challenges the reader to think about these issues and to appreciate that psychiatry is about more than just treating mental illness.
