Providers who wish to transition to billing BWC using their NPI information only should first bill using both identifiers (the BWC provider number plus the NPI). BWC will add new explanation of benefit codes to remittances to confirm it has added NPI data to a provider’s record. Once confirmed, the provider may choose to bill using the NPI rather than the BWC provider number. BWC plans to be able to handle either scenario by May 23, 2007.

As mentioned in the paper entitled, "Medicare Expectations on Determination of Subparts by Medicare Organization Health Care Providers Who Are Covered Entities Under HIPAA," Medicare DME suppliers are required to obtain an NPI for every location. The only exception to this requirement is the situation in which a Medicare DME supplier is a sole proprietor. A sole proprietor is eligible for only one NPI (the individual's NPI) regardless of the number of locations the supplier may have.

Coupled providers can be described as in-process (in-proc) or out-of-process (out-of-proc). When a coupled provider is an in-proc provider, it runs under a shared WMIPRVSE.EXE WMI hosting process and is implemented as a COM in-proc server (.dll). When a provider is an out-of-proc provider, it is started by WMI on request of a client or event, but it runs as a separated process and is implemented as an executable (.exe).

It would be good if providers and parents had education to help them do a better job. Many providers do participate in training. Other providers do not have that chance. Some parents join groups or go to classes. Many others do not have time or do not know about parenting education in their communities. When providers and parents do get education, it often does not cover everything they need.

CIGNA will not disseminate the NPI of other health care providers. The NPPES Data Dissemination Notice states: "Entities wishing to obtain the NPI of a health care provider for use in a standard transaction may contact that health care provider directly and request the NPI. Health care providers who are covered entities under HIPAA (known as "covered health care providers") are required by the NPI final rule to disclose their NPIs to any entity that needs them for use in standard transactions."
