Proverbs: Understanding
built 647 days ago
The theology of Proverbs is the simplest form of theism. The individual man stands in direct relation with God, needing no man or angel to act as mediator (comp. Job v. 1. xxxiii. 23). No supernatural being, except God, is mentioned.
Proverbs are used by speakers for a variety of purposes. Sometimes they are used as a way of saying something gently, in a veiled way. Other times, they are used to carry more weight in a discussion, a weak person is able to enlist the tradition of the ancestors to support his position. Proverbs can ... be used to simply make a conversation/discussion more lively. In many parts of the world, the use of proverbs is a mark of being a good orator.

Although the book begins with a title ascribing the proverbs to Solomon, it is clear from later chapters that he was not the only author of the book. Pr 22:17 refers to the sayings of the wise, and 24:23 mentions additional sayings of the wise. The presence of an introduction in 22:1721 further indicates that these sections stem from a circle of wise men, not from Solomon himself. Ch. 30 is attributed to Agur son of Jakeh and 31:19 to King Lemuel, neither of whom is mentioned elsewhere. Lemuels sayings contain several Aramaic spellings that may point to a non-Israelite background.

Students enjoy the vivid images of proverbs, and they now have an opportunity to use their creativity to come up with some images of their own. For this activity, the sayings have again been written on note cards, but this time each student receives only the first half of a proverb in Spanish (Cuando hay hambre… / Panza llena… ). The students’ job, working either in pairs or individually, is to create a new ending to the proverb. Novice-level students are encouraged to use familiar vocabulary, and the teacher supplies new words as needed. (It may be helpful to brainstorm useful nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. with which students are familiar and to write them on the board.) Next, each student or pair presents the “new” proverb to classmates.

Author: King Solomon is the principal writer of Proverbs. His name appears in 1:1, 10:1, and 25:1. We may ... presume Solomon collected and edited proverbs other than his own, for Ecclesiastes 12:9 says, "And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge, yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs." Indeed, the Hebrew title Mishle Shelomoh is translated "Proverbs of Solomon."
