Proverbs: Books
built 647 days ago
The book of Proverbs is a collection of sayings that were used in ancient Israel to teach God's people how to live right. For the most part, these sayings go back to Solomon, but others are traced back to Agur (30.1) and King Lemuel (31.1).
The book of Proverbs reflects this interchange. Approximately three hundred proverbs are labeled "Proverbs of Solomon" in Proverbs 10:1—22:16. Perhaps this section formed the nucleus of the collection. Some years later, King Hezekiah's scribes added about 130 additional Solomonic proverbs, found in Proverbs 25:1—29:27. "Sayings of the Wise" appear in Proverbs 22:17—24:22, followed by "Further Sayings of the Wise" in Proverbs 24:23-34. Then come "Sayings of Agur" in Proverbs 30, "Sayings of King Lemuel" in Proverbs 31:1-9, and the acrostic poem on the virtuous wife in Proverbs 31:10-31.

The Oghuz Turks’ Book of Dede Korkut, containing twelve heroic legends, is interwoven with proverbs of the 7th through 13th centuries. Those Turkic proverbs are still widely heard in modified form today. A treatise on medicine, Teshil, contains as an appendix (with no explanation by its author) a list of nearly 700 proverbs which some scholars believe are even older’ than those of Dede Korkut. Although Ottoman Turks are not mentioned in these proverbs, Teshil is ... noteworthy for being among the first to contain a collection of proverbs published in Ottoman Turkish (original. Istanbul, 1480: Veled Izbudak published his edition of these in 1936).

Mieder has ... published a series of bibliography volumes on proverb research, as well as a large number of articles and other books in the field. For those interested in proverbs of Africa, Stan Nussbaum has edited a large collection on proverbs of Africa, published on a CD, including reprints of out-of-print collections, original collections, and works on analysis, bibliography, and appplication of proverbs to Christian ministry. For those interested in comparing proverbs across Europe, Paczolay has published a collection of similar proverbs in 55 languages.
Now that students have learned several Spanish-language sayings and demonstrated their understanding of them, they undertake tasks that allow them to explore further the relationship between proverbs and culture. First, students choose two proverbs, one in English and one in Spanish. Their task is to research the history behind each proverb using the Internet, books, family, friends and any other available resource to gather information. They look for answers to questions such as: Where did the proverb come from? In what contexts is it used? In addition to their research, students ... reflect on ways that the Spanish- and English-language proverbs differ.
