The risk for minor defects in an unborn child as a result of intake of Generic Provera is increased if it is taken within the initial four months of conception. Conceiving women, or those planning on conception are therefore strongly discouraged from intake. Breastfeeding women should talk first with their doctor before intake. Similarly, patients who have bleeding disorders, cancer of the breast or the uterus, and liver and gallbladder illness, as well epilepsy, diabetes, kidney and heart illness, migraines, and asthma, are advised likewise.

Depo-Provera is not a good option for women who plan to become pregnant in the near future, since it can take up to a year before you become fertile again. Depo-Provera may ... decrease HDL cholesterol, the good kind of cholesterol that protects against heart disease. In addition, it may speed up the growth of undetected cancers and decrease bone density. Before using Depo-Provera, be sure to ask your health care provider about any medical conditions that might exclude you from using this type of hormonal contraception.

Depo-Provera has what Pearson calls a "quirky history" of approval. The FDA rejected it in the 1970s because tests on beagles and monkeys showed increased rates of cancer. In addition, no long-term study on women had been done.

Depo-Provera has a mild, but definite effect on insulin levels. It is suggested that women with diabetes, or a tendency to diabetes, should be closely followed if taking Depo. This is a significant issue for Aboriginal women in Canada who have high rates of diabetes, who as a population do not generally have good access to health care services, and to whom Depo-Provera is often given.

Provera... known as medroxyprogesterone acetate, is actually a derivative of progesterone, a female hormone that is naturally produced by the body. It is usually prescribed to women who do not start menstruating at puberty as well as women who stop menstruating before menopause because it can help in promoting menstrual cycles. Another use for this drug is stopping the abnormal bleeding of the uterus as long as it is not caused by fibroids or tumors. When combined with estrogens, medroxyprogesterone can also be taken in by menopausal women in order to prevent endometrial cancer.

Women who use Depo Provera may experience side effects, the incidence and severity of which vary from person to person. In clinical trials, the most frequently reported side effects included menstrual irregularities, abdominal pain or discomfort, weight gain, dizziness, headache, fatigue and nervousness. Some women ... experience breast tenderness, depression, and decreased libido. New data shows that Depo Provera use decreases bone mineral density in women and adolescents — an effect that appeared greater the longer the use.
