Provera: Women

Depo-Provera is administered as an injection into the muscle at the back of the arm or in the buttocks. Some women's health advocates speculate that aggressive local welfare administrators may unofficially and coercively seek to limit the number of children born to a single mother by tying a client's welfare status to her agreeing to receive Depo-Provera injections.

Depo-Provera is so effective that out of 1,000 women who use it correctly and consistently, only three will become pregnant during the first year of use. Depo-Provera will not protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. Using a condom will help to prevent the transmission of many STDs as well as offer you extra protection against pregnancy.

A study by National Institutes of Health researchers released in 2004 suggests that using Depo Provera could make women more susceptible to sexually transmitted diseases. Women in the study were three times as likely to develop chlamydia or gonorrhea as women who were not using a hormonal contraceptive. While researchers don't fully understand the link between the contraceptive and the increase in STDs, they caution that women on Depo Provera who are in non-monogamous relationships should use condoms regularly to protect themselves from infection.

Depo Provera use offers contraceptive convenience and privacy to a woman. There are no pills to remember to take every day nor are there any contraceptive devices to store. Also, since Depo Provera contains no estrogen, some women who cannot take birth control pills or use other methods involving estrogen may be able to use Depo Provera. In addition, Depo Provera use seems to confer some protection from endometrial cancer and may ... protect against ovarian cancer.

Depo-Provera is a long acting form of birth control. It is given as a relatively painless injection (shot) every 12 weeks under a healthcare provider's supervision. The active ingredient in Depo-Provera is a chemical similar to the natural hormone progesterone, that is produced by your ovaries during the second half of your menstrual cycle. Depo-Provera has been used for contraception for almost 30 years and by more than 3.5 million women.

The majority of women who use Depo Provera report irregular periods and bleeding for the first 3-6 months. After that time, most women have no periods at all. This is not a harmful side effect and, in fact, some women consider the absence of periods as one of the benefits of using Depo Provera.
