Provera: Months

The book Contraceptive Technology says: "It is not possible to discontinue Depo Provera immediately. Weight gain, depression, breast tenderness, allergic reactions, and menstrual irregularities may continue until Depo Provera is cleared from a woman's body, about 6 to 8 months after her last injection. After discontinuing Depo Provera, women may ... have a 6 to 12 month delay in return of fertility."

Every 3 months your health care provider will give you a shot of Depo-Provera. The shot is usually given in a muscle of the upper arm or buttock within 5 days after the start of your menstrual period.

Depo-Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) is a drug very similar to progesterone, a hormone normally produced by the ovaries every month as part of the menstrual cycle. Depo-Provera is an injectable medicine that prevents pregnancy for up to 3 months with each injection ("shot").
Women who want to become pregnant may stop using Depo Provera at any time. For some women, fertility returns immediately. For others, it may take 6-18 months or longer for the body's hormone cycle to go back to normal.

If you want to get pregnant in the next year, you should not use Depo-Provera, since it can prevent pregnancy for 6-10 months after the last injection. However, if timing is not an issue and you don't want to get pregnant for a couple of years, then you can use Depo-Provera (if it's right for you) until up to one year before you want to get pregnant.
Pfizer recommends that a woman stop her Depo Provera injections one year before she wishes to become pregnant. This is because it takes an average of nine to 10 months (sometimes more than a year) to regain fertility and begin ovulating after receiving the last shot.
