Proton: Payloads
built 636 days ago
The agreement for the launch of the DIRECTV 8 onboard the Proton rocket was announced on July 13, 2004. In preparation for launch, the rocket with its payload was rolled to the launch pad on May 18, 2005.
Multiple payload fairings are available for the Proton. It is a two-piece, hinged, clamshell structure of monocoque composite sandwich construction. It does not incorporate separation rocket motors, and no pyro gases are released during operation.
For the first time, a digital flight control system replaced traditional analog hardware onboard Proton. It allowed more efficient propellant consumption during the flight and, as a result, the delivery of bigger payloads into orbit.
