Proteus
built 661 days ago
This image of Proteus was acquired by the Voyager 2 spacecraft on August 25, 1989 from a range of 146,000 kilometers (91,000 miles). The resolution is about 1.35 kilometers (.85 miles) per pixel. The satellite, seen here about half illuminated, has an average radius of 200 kilometers (120 miles). It is dark (albedo 6 percent) and spectrally grey. Hints of crater-like forms and groove-like lineations can be discerned. The apparent graininess of the image is caused by the short exposure necessary to avoid significant smear.

Proteus is a bacterial genus within the medically important group of Enterobacteriaceae. Species most commonly associated with clinical disease are Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris and Proteus penneri. Proteus species are notorious in medical microbiological laboratories because of their rapid swarming growth on commonly used agar plates. Noteworthy is the ability of these species to inhibit growth of unrelated strains resulting in a macroscopically visible line of reduced bacterial growth where two swarming strains intersect. This line is named Dienes line after its discoverer Louis Dienes.

Proteus syndrome is a rare condition that can be loosely categorized as a hamartomatous disorder. It is a complex disorder with multisystem involvement and great clinical variability. Once thought to have neurofibromatosis, Joseph Merrick (... known as "the elephant man") is now, in retrospect, thought by clinical experts to actually have had Proteus syndrome.

PROTEUS is ... the name of a cross-genre roleplaying game. PROTEUS is a freely downloadable game available through base113 Games. The game focuses on characters with incredible mental powers, Psionics. PROTEUS was a project to artificially create such people for military purposes. The name of the Greek god was chosen to reflect both the fact that these individuals are extremely adaptable and that they are among the first of their kind. An expanded version, Proteus: Second Edition, is currently in the works.

The Proteus Mind Machine includes two independent color channels, each of which has its own brightness and pulse rate. This means that Proteus sessions can shift smoothly between (up to) 4,096 colors in real time, creating extraordinary visuals and mapping colors more precisely to states of consciousness. For example, lower frequencies can be set to soothing green, while higher, energizing frequencies are the appropriate red; the “peak performance” color amber lies in between.
