Proteus: Programs
built 661 days ago
The Proteus language is a wide-spectrum parallel programming notation that supports the expression of both high-level architecture-independent specifications and lower-level architecture-specific implementations. A methodology based on successive refinement and interactive experimentation supports the development of parallel algorithms from specification to various efficient architecture-dependent implementations. The Proteus system combines the language and tools supporting this methodology. This paper presents a brief overview of the Proteus system and describes its use in the exploration and development of several non-trivial algorithms, including the fast multipole algorithm for N-body computations.

Proteus is an execution-driven parallel-computer simulator which simulates message-passing and shared-memory parallel computers. It can simulate several network types and memory configurations; additional ones can be added by users. It has extensive facilities for collecting and displaying simulation data. Programs to run on the simulated system are written in an extended version of C.

The Proteus will give you an awe-inspiring experience. To begin, simply select one of the pre-programmed sessions, put on the headphones and lightframes, and press the start button. The session will gently guide you into other mental states by stimulating your senses with special patterns of sound and synchronized colored lights.

Although Proteus looks and functions like a pro, its stability is less than stellar. Third-party clients may never be on a level playing field feature-wise, with the officially sponsored chat programs. However, superior usability and an outstanding interface are reason enough to download Proteus.

While it was considered that Merrick may have suffered from either type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF 1) or Proteus Syndrome, the DNA evidence did not conclusively prove that Merrick had either on its own or the two together. Based on published clinical features, cancer geneticists and other clinical geneticists believe that Merrick had at least Proteus Syndrome. Moreover, because NF 1 is more common, some in the program suggest another intriguing possibility -- that the Elephant Man was tragically cursed with both debilitating diseases. The program gives viewers a sensitive and poignant inside look at these diseases and offers a strand of hope for people today who suffer from similar deformities and debilitations.

The current version of Proteus is a variation of Isetl that supports thread and data parallelism. Isetl is an interactive implementation of SETL (SETL was developed at the Courant Institute; See Schwartz, J.T., et al, Programming with sets: An introduction to SETL, Springer-Verlag, 1986. ) a programming language built around mathematical notation and objects, primarily sets and functions. It contains the usual collection of statements common to procedural languages, but a richer set of expressions.
