If the active ingredient in ‘Proscar’ is absorbed by a woman who is pregnant with a male baby, it may affect the normal development of the baby’s sex organs. Therefore, women who are or may potentially be pregnant, should not be exposed to ‘Proscar’. They should not take ‘Proscar’. In addition, they should not handle broken or crushed tablets or be exposed to the drug through sexual contact with a man taking ‘Proscar’. Therefore, if your sexual partner is or may potentially be pregnant, you must avoid exposing her to your semen which could contain a tiny amount of the drug - for example, by using a condom during sexual activity. If a woman who is pregnant comes into contact with the active ingredient in ‘Proscar’, a doctor should be consulted.
Proscar (Finasteride) is used to treat the condition known as benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH. BPH occurs in older men and results in an enlarged prostate gland. Untreated BPH may be a contributing factor in prostate cancer. The active ingredient Proscar (Finasteride), blocks the formation of DHT (one of the male hormones that causes hairloss), and gives the hair follicles a chance to recover and grow.
Proscar should never be taken by a woman or a child. Proscar can be absorbed through the skin, and women or children should not be permitted to handle Proscar tablets. Although Proscar is not for use by women, this medication can cause birth defects if a woman is exposed to it during pregnancy. Proscar tablets should not be handled by a woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant. If a woman accidentally comes into contact with this medication from a broken or crushed tablet, wash the area with soap and water right away.

Proscar can affect the PSA blood test for prostate cancer. The PSA usually falls by 50 percent or so. You may need to establish a new baseline PSA for future reference. There is some preliminary data that suggests Proscar may protect against the development of cancer of the prostate. This is NOT confirmed yet, and is not a guarantee that prostate cancer will not occur later on. You will need to be seen on a yearly basis to have a rectal examination and PSA blood test.

If there's even a possibility that they're pregnant, women should avoid handling a crushed or broken Proscar tablet for fear of absorbing some of the active ingredient through the skin. Whole tablets are safe to handle thanks to a protective outer coating. Use Proscar with caution if you have liver problems.
‘Proscar’ helps to shrink the enlarged prostate and relieves your symptoms. ‘Proscar’ will help reduce the risk of you developing a sudden inability to pass urine (known as acute urinary retention) and the need for surgery.
