Propecia: Taking Propecia
built 806 days ago
Propecia is the first and only FDA-approved pill proven to treat male pattern hair loss. This medication effectively treats male pattern hair loss on the vertex and anterior mid-scalp area. For most men, Propecia increases the number of scalp hairs in the first year of treatment, helping to fill in thin or balding areas of the scalp. In addition, men taking Propecia may note a slowing of hair loss. Although results will vary, generally you will not be able to grow back all of the hair you have lost. There is not sufficient evidence that Propecia works in the treatment of receding hairline in the temporal area.

Before taking Propecia there are a number of things that should be discussed with your doctor. For example, if you have a history of liver problems, you might not be able to take the drug or may need a smaller dose. Additionally, Propecia is only for men and should never be handled by pregnant women. Studies have shown that the drug is capable of causing birth defects if it comes into contact with pregnant women.

Propecia has some side effects like other prescription medications. In some cases, certain sexual side effects are felt by patients. These men noted one or more of the following: a decrease in the quantity of semen, less desire for sex and difficulty in getting an erection. Less than 2% of male patient are affected by these side effects. By taking propecia, side effects disappeared in men. Some other side effects of Propecia include problems with ejaculation, testicular pain, allergic reactions such as hives, itching, swelling of the face and lips and rash, breast enlargement and tenderness.

Once you begin taking Propecia, you can expect to begin seeing new hair growth during the first twelve months. Using Propecia will help new hair grow in areas of the scalp that are balding. Propecia may help slow the rate of existing hair loss. Do not expect to grow back all that you have lost. Few studies have been done to show how Propecia helps grow new hair around the hairline or on the sides of the head. Male baldness typically occurs gradually, and healthy hair grows an average of one half inch per month.

Like all prescription drugs, Propecia may cause side effects. In clinical studies, side effects from Propecia were uncommon and did not affect most men. A very small number of men experienced certain sexual side effects, such as: less desire for sex; difficulty in achieving an erection; and a decrease in the amount of semen. Each of these side effects occurred in less than 2% of men. These side effects were reversible and went away in men who stopped taking Propecia. These side effects ... disappeared in most men (58%) who continued taking Propecia.
