Perhaps Promise Keepers' most publicized event was its Stand in the Gap: A Sacred Assembly of men open-air gathering at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. on October 4, 1997. C-SPAN carried the event live in its entirety, and around 1 million men of diverse ethnic and national backgrounds from many if not all of the United States and around the world participated in a six-hour time of prayer and repentance. International media covered the gathering as a lead event of that weekend. Newspapers from all around America and around the world—some as far away as Hong Kong; printed stories about the event. For a group its size, Stand In The Gap was one of the Washington, DC's most peaceful gatherings ever.

For Promise Keepers, the key to success with their new statement was the realization that Catholics and Protestants could understand the same sentence in two different ways. Their goal, then, was to formulate a doctrinal statement so that both sides could interpret it based on their own presuppositions. Each group would then understand the statement differently, but both would be satisfied. The key to discerning what is wrong, therefore, is to read the statement as a Catholic would interpret it.

Although Bill McCartney is credited with founding Promise Keepers, until late-1998 he was basically the figurehead, holding the title as CEO of PK. Randy Phillips was the president and administrative head of Promise Keepers. As of October 1998, McCartney is overseeing three divisions as president and founder. Randy Phillips has moved from president to the new position of vice president for global ministries. Phillips has served as a senior pastor for five years, as an associate pastor for ten years, and led the Denver Broncos' Bible study for two years. Phillips, like McCartney, is a former Roman Catholic.

The Promise Keepers' argument is as follows: the Bible teaches that the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church. PLEASE note that it is the spiritual head of the household! Also keep in mind that Christ ... said that if you are to be the leader, you must be the servant of all. Christ served the church to the point of death. A good husband must be willing to do the same for his wife. When did Jesus ever grab power for himself, exalt himself, or become tyrannical?

What Makes a Man?, Promise Keepers' first hardbound book written for the organization, was first published by The Navigators' Navpress publishing arm in 1992 for its first Folsom Field gathering in June of that year. Dr. James Dobson had McCartney on his Focus on the Family nationwide radio program that same month. McCartney resigned his coaching position in 1994 in order to focus his attention on the organization.

In October 1997, when the Washington event took place, Promise Keepers had become nationally known and controversial, pictured on the covers of news magazines and a topic for talk shows. The group was alternately praised for its emphasis on men's moral rejuvenation and criticized for its events' exclusion of women and for some speakers' telling men to be leaders in church and at home.
