Prometheus was the son of a Titan, one of the giant Elder Gods of Greek mythology. Prometheus was a friend to mortal men; his best-known act was sneaking into the heavens and stealing fire from the gods, which he then delivered to humans on Earth. Prometheus ... foretold the doom of Zeus, but refused to tell Zeus the secret of how that doom would occur. Enraged, Zeus had Prometheus chained to a rock in the mountains, where an eagle (some say a vulture) came every day and gnawed his liver. This went on for 30 years until the hero Hercules slew the bird, ending Prometheus's torment.

Prometheus is a minor character in the novel The Big Over Easy, where he is a lodger in the home of the protagonist, Jack Spratt. Prometheus later marries Spratt's daughter Pandora, despite the 4,000 year difference in their ages.

Prometheus has two counter/timers for timing operations. The first counter is 24 bits wide and is generally used to control A/D sampling rate. Driven by a user-programmable 10MHz or 1MHz on-board clock, it can provide output pulses anywhere from 10MHz down to 0.06Hz. The second counter/timer is 16 bits wide and can be driven by either 10MHz or 100KHz on-board clocks or a user-supplied input signal. It can be used for timing, counting/totalizing, or programmable interrupt generator functions.

The design of the Prometheus BI client/server technology ... enables the system to be used effectively across a Wide Area Network (WAN). The backend servers are given a fast connection to the Prometheus BI data repository. Middle-tier servers are distributed across the WAN so that all clients have fast access to a middle-tier server. The distributed middle-tier servers communicate among themselves and ultimately with the backend servers in a way that minimises network traffic while maximising throughput of queries and results. The net result is that a corporation can provide effective access from its dispersed field offices to a Prometheus BI data repository maintained in a central office.

Being a Titan, Prometheus 1 should be immortal by birth (a sad privilege since ages of torture awaited him). Yet, some affirm that Prometheus 1 was granted immortality, after Heracles 1 shot the Centaur Chiron with a poisoned arrow. The wound proved incurable, and Chiron wished to die, but being immortal, he could not. It was then that Prometheus 1 offered himself to Zeus to be immortal in his stead, and the request being granted by the god, Chiron died and Prometheus 1 obtained immortality.
