Prometheus was said to have been the husband of Clymene, or Hesione, or Asia, or Pandora. His only child was his son, Deucalion, who married the daughter of Epimetheus and Pandora, Pyrrha, and became the ruler of Phthia.

Prometheus and Pandora, another small moon of Saturn, are known as shepherd satellites. These two small moons orbit within Saturn's vast ring system. Like shepherds guiding their flocks of sheep, these two moons guide the particles of Saturn's "F ring" into a narrow band. The combined gravitational pulls of the two moons force the ring particles to orbit within a narrow range.

Prometheus had warned Epimetheus not to accept gifts from Zeus but, Pandora's beauty was too great and he allowed her to stay. Eventually, Pandora's curiosity about the jar she was forbidden to open became to great. She opened the jar and out flew all manor of evils, sorrows, plagues, and misfortunes. However, the bottom of the jar held one good thing - hope.

The various unfavourable encounters with Prometheus caused Zeus to look upon Prometheus with disfavour, and he plotted to take his revenge. Until this point, there had been no women on earth, so Zeus directed Hephaestus to mould a female human being out of the earth and water, and he ordered the other gods to give her some of their attributes as gifts; she was named Pandora. Before being taken to the earth, Pandora was given a box which she was warned never to open. Zeus and Hermes took Pandora to the home of Prometheus, but he refused to accept her. Then Hermes took her to the home of Epimetheus. Although his brother, Prometheus, had warned hime not to accept anything from Zeus, Epimetheus was so impressed by Pandora's charms that he took her in as is wife.

Prometheus (with his foresight) saw the curse that Pandora and her box carried. He refused the gift, giving it instead to his brother Epimetheus who opened the box and released the chained horrors upon the world.

Prometheus acts as a shepherd satellite for the inner edge of Saturn's F Ring. Recent images from the Cassini probe show that the Promethean gravitational field creates kinks and knots in the F Ring as the moon 'steals' material from it. The orbit of Prometheus appears to be chaotic, as a consequence of a mean motion resonance with Pandora. The most appreciable changes in their orbits occur approximately every 6.2 years [1], when the periapsis of Pandora lines up with the apoapsis of Prometheus and the moons approach to within about 1400 km. Prometheus is itsef a significant perturber of Atlas.
