Project Gotham Racing

Launched with the Xbox back in 2001, Project Gotham Racing was an incredible coup for Microsoft. Not only did it provide them with the quality racing title that every successful console needs, but it gave them a bonafide contender to Sony's Gran Turismo. Featuring a "Kudos" system that gave you points based on your racing style, PGR was one of the best selling titles on the system in the early going. With two quality racers under Bizarre Creations' belt (the first being Metropolis Street Racer), it was high time for them to improve on the formula that they've been so successful with in the past. Project Gotham Racing 2 is the fruit of their labor, and it would be a total understatement to say that this game is excellently crafted.
Box artwork for Project Gotham Racing 3. Project Gotham Racing 3 is a racing game that was launched alongside the Xbox 360 in 2005. It is the third game in the Project Gotham series and is developed by Bizarre Creations who ... developed the first two. The game combines new elements like Gotham TV with old ones like Kudos which have been around in the PGR series since the first installment. Players can race around five cities across the world in 80 licensed cars.
This sequel to the million-selling Project Gotham Racing features officially licensed sports cars from such manufacturers as Ferrari and Porsche. Over 50 automobiles are available to race as or against in a variety of new cities, including venues in Hong Kong and Edinburgh. The basic structure of its predecessor remains intact, meaning players will compete for Kudos points by demonstrating a number of skills while racing. Of course, new techniques will have to mastered to earn additional Kudos, and the ranking system has been redesigned to better reflect a player's true racing ability. Multiplayer competition is supported through Microsoft's Xbox Live broadband service. ~ Scott Alan Marriott, All Game Guide

Even though the bike lineup is impressive, the inclusion of them into Project Gotham Racing 4 isn’t that much of a draw unless you consider yourself a two-wheel fanatic. Yeah, wheelies or bike drifts for Kudos are pretty cool, but something gets lost in the translation when motorcycles are maneuvered with a game pad. Even MotoGP has a tough time getting the bike riding experience right, so it’s not necessarily a negative on Bizarre’s efforts here. It’s just that motorcycles turn by leaning, and nobody has figured out a good way to translate that into a console game yet. To their credit, the bikes surely look cool, especially when wrecked in the first person mode or when weather beats down on the rider.
Overview: When the original Xbox first came out in 2001, Project Gotham Racing was lauded as one of the must-have games. The game did well, and it lived through two sequels. Six years later, a fourth one is out, and it maintains the same concept of racing through the streets of New York, London, Shangai and beyond, racking up points and adding to your virtual garage. But Project Gotham 4 has added a few new features, tweaked its graphics and, most importantly, you can trade your steering wheel for a handlebar now - and boy is that fun.

Besides the core racing component and the amazing graphics, Project Gotham Racing 3 is packed to the brim with features, both online and off. You can choose to try out cars on the test track before you buy and ... pick which color you prefer (for most of the fleet) and you’ll unlock concept cars for purchase as you progress. You can race at multiple difficulties, create your own routes with the included track editor and either join a series of ranked, online career matches or set up your own room where you control the parameters of the race. Other cool extras include things like the real time updates of your achievements (and those of your friends) via a news ticker and Gotham TV, where you can sit back and watch the best players on Live go at it – entertaining, and perhaps a valuable learning tool for aspiring racers looking to better their technique.
