Many elements of PBL are derived from principles of inquiry-based learning, which in turn, were derived from the constructivist teaching approach.. In inquiry-based learning, the students are involved after their interest has been aroused, and they have been encouraged to find solutions, answers, explanations, or make decisions connected with the researched subject. Their curiosity is satisfied when they construct mental frameworks to explain the researched phenomena, and ... meaningful learning is assimilated (Haury, 1993).

This review examines research related to a teaching and learning model popularly referred to as "Project-Based Learning" (PBL). All of the research on Project-Based Learning has taken place in the past ten years and most of it in just the last few years. Since there is not a large body of PBL research, the review is inclusive rather than selective.

PBL means learning through experiences. For example, high school students design a school for the future and learn advanced math concepts and engineering along the way. Elementary students study single-cell organisms in order to provide data to researchers in a lab. Others build and race electric cars and learn about energy efficiency. Many projects focus on environmental concerns, such as testing pollution levels in local waters and researching methods for cleanup and then reporting findings and strategies for improvement to community officials.
