Project-Based Learning: Problems
built 642 days ago
The primary workshop goal is to help each individual participant make progress in learning to make effective use of ICT-Assisted Project-Based Learning in their teaching. Many of the same ideas ... apply to ICT-Assisted Problem-Based Learning, but this topic will receive only brief treatment in the workshop.
The use of the Problem Based Learning site was extremely helpful in focusing the students' attention on important sites. As an NBCT, John knows that providing a student with accurate and useful information from the Internet is important.
One immediate benefit of practicing PBL is the unique way that it can motivate students by engaging them in their own learning. PBL provides opportunities for students to pursue their own interests and questions and make decisions about how they will find answers and solve problems. Why do "PROJECT BASED LEARNING"? To improve education for all students. To transform teaching from telling about to doing. To provide opportunities for students to pursue their own interests. To allow students to make decisions about how they will find answers and solve problems. To facilitate student integration of the content of different subject. To teach children to use their minds well, apply what they learn in school to lifelong endeavours and to be technologically literate.PBL helps make learning relevant and useful to students by establishing connections to life outside the classroom, addressing real world concerns, and developing real world skills. Many of the skills learned through PBL are those desired by today's employer, including the ability to work well with others, make thoughtful decisions, take initiative, and solve complex problems.

Learning Matters Learning by doing is the method behind the project based learning going on at Klamath Falls City Schools. Students have projects they do in teams and as individuals. Working on the project develops skills like problem-solving and teamwork, while re-enforcing skills in the traditional reading, writing and arithmetic. The students become active learners in the process.

It is stated that meaningful learning occurs as long as the context of to-be-learned skills resemble real-life situations (Brown, Collins, & Duguid, 1989). In this sense research on contextual factors ... reccommends that the instruction should be carried out in a problem-solving context in which students are able to maka decisions and transform their prior knowledge to their existing knowledge. Such knowledge construction is more flexible than the knowledge acquired from traditional teaching methods (Boaler, 1998b).
According to the Technology and Education Reform: Technical Research Report (August, 1995), PBL has increased motivation, heightened self-esteem, improved technical skills, enhanced better student self-regulation of learning and afforded accomplishments of more complex tasks. PBL has proven to be effective in increasing student motivation and in improving problem-solving and higher order thinking skills.
