built 639 days ago
Project Based Learning distinguishes Cal Poly as a national leader in hands-on engineering education. Students prepare for outstanding professional leadership by participating in real-world projects undertaken by multidisciplinary teams using state-of-the-art tools and facilities. Industry has the opportunity to invest in a win-win partnership with the College of Engineering through project conception and by providing technical assistance and support.

Researchers stated that PBL should be implemented at all levels of learning with a few modifications. Students have the opportunity to learn both the material and to be assed on one of their strongest intelligences in terms of multiple intelligence theory. Furthermore, in cooperative learning environments along with projects, students construct new ideas by their taken-as-shared knowledge. They feel confident in completing their task, their motivation enhances by peer interaction. Bartscher et al. (1995) suggested the incorporation of field trips and guest speakers into the curriculum whenever possible. They underlined that such integrations provide the opportunity to relate the learning process to real-life situations.
Secondary students have the potential to experience a myriad of Project-Based Learning opportunities. One such class, a secondary elective, "Marketing, Meeting, and Special Event Planning", engages students via the Project-Based Learning model. Students learn the required competencies of a Special Event Planner by answering The Essential Question, "What are the key elements to include in planning a successful school-wide Career Day?" Students were engaged over a period of 12 weeks in the real-world learning activities of this unit with the culminating project of a school-wide Career Day.
