Project 86: Band
built 640 days ago
Eight years into what has been a whirlwind career for the Orange County natives, Project 86 are returning to their roots, releasing their fourth studio album entitled, "Songs to Burn Your Bridges By," June 1, 2004 on Tooth & Nail Records. The band, begun in early 1996 as young musicians bonding in their common musical interests and personal beliefs, was almost immediately a hit, garnering label interest not only in California, but ... as far north as Seattle, Washington, where Tooth & Nail owner Brandon Ebel recognized and signed the group in 1998.

On 2007's RIVAL FACTIONS, the long-running Christian alt-rock ensemble Project 86 unveils a collection of songs that nod to New Wave and post-punk styles, sounds that rarely make their way into the CCM world. Although some tunes find the Orange County, California-based band seemingly intent on becoming the CCM counterpart to the Bravery--most notably the synth-laden "Molotov"--other tracks, such as the urgent "Evil (A Chorus of Resistance)," display the group's trusted metal roots, making FACTIONS an album that should appeal to old fans while ... garnering new admirers.

Given the varied nature of the band's back catalog, it is hardly surprising that debate currently runs rampant over which Project 86 record constitutes the Orange County foursome's defining work. The self-titled debut and sophomore outing, Drawing Black Lines, were of a piece with the energetic, rap-metal workouts of artists like P.O.D. and Rage Against the Machine.

The next two years saw Project 86's addition of a second guitarist (Cory Edelman, formerly of No Innocent Victim) and his subsequent departure just a few months later. Also, influential rocker Marilyn Manson took interest in the band and had the song "P.S.", originally released on Drawing Black Lines, added to the Blair Witch 2 soundtrack. Probably due to this interest, Project 86 became a higher priority for Atlantic. Atlantic poured over half a million into Project's next musical foray, entitled Truthless Heroes (2002), which, though proving to be the band's most popular outing yet, was released amidst some turmoil.

While most metal bands who supposedly "rage against the machine" deliver little more than a few fist-pumping choruses, Project 86 savagely attacks the hypocrisy of the music industry on Truthless Heroes. ...Read full review

Project 86 are calling Truthless Heroes a concept album — something few contemporary metal bands have attempted. It’s an enraged commentary on the evils of American pop culture: an individual with a television set for a head adorns the cover, and "commercials" are placed at regular intervals throughout the disc to simulate the feel of an hour-long TV show.
