The microcontroller on the right of this USB flash drive is controlled with embedded firmware. Programs written using a declarative language specify the properties that have to be met by the output and do not specify any implementation details. Two broad categories of declarative languages are functional languages and logical languages. The principle behind functional languages (like Haskell) is to not allow side-effects, which makes it easier to reason about programs like mathematical functions.[4] The principle behind logical languages (like Prolog) is to define the problem to be solved — the goal — and leave the detailed solution to the Prolog system itself.[5] The goal is defined by providing a list of subgoals. Then each subgoal is defined by further providing a list of its subgoals, etc. If a path of subgoals fails to find a solution, then that subgoal is backtracked and another path is systematically attempted.
Programs selected for this honor were judged especially noteworthy for their effectiveness and innovation in helping customers achieve greater levels of energy efficiency in their homes and business facilities. "These programs are delivering energy savings that are critical in helping customers cope with today's high energy costs, plus they make an important environmental contribution because they help reduce greenhouse gas emissions," noted Martin Kushler, Ph.D., ACEEE's Utilities Program Director. He added, "This is truly a 'win-win' situation."
Environmental Studies Programs – Offers school children a park experience that explores interaction between people and their environment. Students learn about earlier cultures and lifestyles and use this knowledge to recreate elements of the culture or era being studied.

OfficeMax has ... identified several programs for improving growth and efficiency in Contract operations. These include continuing to focus on the middle-market and other high-growth, high-return customers; pursuing product extension opportunities; driving Retail sales through Contract customers; completing an evaluation of Canadian operations; and implementing system-wide cost efficiencies.
Program evaluators may assess programs on several dimensions to determine whether the program works. Rossi et. al. (2004) divide these dimensions into 5 main categories: needs assessment, program theory, process analysis, impact analysis, and cost-benefit & cost-effectiveness analysis.[1]
