Probiotics: Research
built 635 days ago
Research shows the striking effects of lysed probiotics are due to muramyl peptides in the cell fragments. ““European doctors went deeper to understand the healthy role of probiotics decades ago, and used the bacteria as a jumping-off point for a new bio-technology, In simple terms, muramyl peptides regulate the correlation between different branches of the human immune system. When probiotics are lysed, the muramyl peptides become bio-available. The muramyl peptides organize an immune response to foreign invaders and environmental pathogens,” said Dr. Luba Shynkarenko, former dean of the Institute of Biotechnology, National Technical University, Kiev, Ukraine.

It is safe to say that consistent quality research is the prime driver of growth in the probiotics industry. In addition to exploring other aspects of these microorganisms, the focus of the science of probiotics is on identifying and isolating specific probiotic strains, and exploring the mechanisms through which each strain protects the host. Ongoing research shows that probiotics differ in terms of their characteristics, and the nature of the associated health benefits, including the finding that some beneficial effects may be strain-specific.

Dr. Scott Weese of the Department of Clinical Studies at the University of Guelph is burning to build on his current research of probiotics in horses. His work is contributing to clearly determining the appropriate organisms, appropriate doses and conditions that are potentially treatable with probiotics.

Researchers at the University Medical Center in Utrecht, Netherlands found probiotics, ‘good’ bacteria that live in the small intestines, increase the risk of death in patients with severe acute pancreatitis. Sixteen percent of the study participants who were administered probiotics died, compared with only six percent of those who did not receive probiotics.

The need to build partnerships and better coordinate research between these two areas will be important in the future in order to further build Canadian research capacity in probiotics. Mechanisms should be established to provide more opportunities for interactions between the two research communities as well as with scientists involved in other areas of NHPs in order to encourage synergies of common activities to avoid duplication.

Even without all the answers from science, probiotics are a multibillion-dollar global industry. In the United States alone, retail sales of probiotic-containing foods and supplements totaled an estimated at $764 million in 2005 and are projected to reach $1 billion in 2010, according to market research firm BCC Research.
