Using spinners, your child can practice probability and statistics. Make two spinners that are the same, or use spinners from commercial games. You and your child each spin the spinner 24 times. Each time you spin, compare the results to see if you have a match. Predict how many spins will result in a match. Then do the experiment.

Some fundamental concepts of probability and statistics are treated, with the aim to circumstantiate and to establish some procedures of numerical elaboration. For this purpose deductive argumentations are used, performed in terms of logic and mathematical analysis. A wide attention to the preliminary description of the logical and mathematical symbolic tools is dedicated. Are extensively shown fundamental properties and definitions, pertaining to the concepts of event and probability. Is reached the probability density of a random variable, by means of the analysis of properties characteristic of statistical sample and universe. Are presented important aspects of the probability density of a set and of a function of random variables.

Two general themes of research in the Probability and Statistics Group are the use of combinatorial techniques. In Statistics, a focus lies on computational issues, and the research in the group is quite applied. In probability, research has a strong statistical physics flavour. Applications in probability are mainly in electrical engineering (networking and telecommunications).

The role of probability and statistics in the sciences was not limited to estimation and measurement. Equally significant, and no less important for the formation of the mathematical field, were statistical theories of collective phenomena that bypassed the study of individuals. The social science bearing the name statistics was the prototype of this approach.

This undergraduate-level probability and statistics textbook was published by W.H. Freeman in Summer 2003. See the publisher's page about the book if you would like to order a copy, or if you would like an examination copy to consider adopting it as a textbook for your course.

As an alternative to pay services, there are several websites that offer free probability and statistics help. These websites are operated as forums where you register a user name and then post your question on a message board. Then, any other members who feel like responding to your question will do so. Be aware... that these websites make no guarantees as to the qualifications of their members. So you might end up with inaccurate explanations and incorrect answers, or your questions might not get answered at all consequently.
