Pro-Life Movement

A[L]ways feeble and delicate, as pacifists are apt to be, the Pro-Life Movement in the United States of America finally succumbed to the rigors of life in the modern age and was pronounced dead. D-E-A-D.

In 1992 the Pro-Life Movement in Maryland was dealt a devastating blow. Reeling from a popular vote defeat on a pro-life referendum, the pro-life community organized a statewide pro-life congress that was held on May 22, 1993. This congress, attended by over 150 pro-life supporters, sought to rebuild the Pro-Life Movement in Maryland. A survey was distributed at this congress, the results tabulated, and a summary distributed to attendees. Based on a “combination approach” and organized by legislative district and pro-life organizations, Pro-Life Maryland was born.

Far from failing, as the Gorney and Risen/Thomas books suggest, the pro- life movement has kept the abortion debate very much alive. Externally, the abortion issue is now an ingredient in everything from campaign finance reform to the role of HMOs. Internally, fewer and fewer within the movement brush aside the necessity of attempting to secure legislative and legal protection for the unborn, which necessarily requires serious, long- term involvement in electoral politics. This near- consensus did not exist even five years ago. Further evidence of this newfound sophistication is that it has become almost a cliché that peaceful, legal, cultural transformation and legislative/political initiatives are not competing but rather complementary approaches.

The pro-life activist movement has a history of controversy. As a result of biased media coverage of pro-life activists, especially during the heyday of the Operation Rescue sit-ins, the public perception of the activist is an aggressive, angry, self-righteous, even violent, extremist. Even some pro-lifers who have not been involved in activism tend to keep their distance from the folks with the picket signs.

The pro-life movement seems to be committed to gauging its influence by endorsements it gets from national political celebrities, but time has proven that those platitudes won’t stop babies from being killed. The movement’s support for the current president might even help to finish the work of destroying the U.S. Constitution that was so hideously forwarded by Roe.

Here in Britain, the pro-life movement awakens others to that kind of love. The vocation of the human person to love and to be loved is promoted by groups who care for women in need: LIFE, Christians for Caring, Lifeline and, in Scotland, the Innocents.
