Prince Edward Island: Prince Edward Islands
built 656 days ago
Prince Edward Island lies in a portion of the Gulf of St. Lawrence Plain, which is a subdivision of the Appalachian Region, a landform that dominates eastern North America. Structurally, the Gulf of St. Lawrence Plain is a low basin, and most of the island consists of gently rolling plains. Few areas on the island exceed 60 m (200 ft) in elevation. The highest point on the island, in the Bonshaw Hills, rises to 142 m (466 ft) above sea level. The northern side of the island has fine white beaches and is protected from the sea by dunes. The island’s southern side is bordered by low sandstone bluffs, averaging about 6 m (20 ft) high.

About one-half of Prince Edward Island is covered with forest, usually in the form of relatively small lots. The forest is mostly a mixture of deciduous and coniferous trees such as sugar maple, yellow birch, red spruce, balsam fir, hemlock, and white pine. The wildlife of the province is limited. Small numbers of white-tailed deer and black bear are among the few large mammals; fur-bearing animals such as beaver, muskrat, mink, otter, and red fox ... inhabit the island. Many marine animals, notably lobster, oysters, clams, scallops, cod, and hake, live in coastal waters. A commercially valuable alga called Irish moss is harvested along the shoreline.

Prince Edward Island joined Confederation on July 1, 1873. Despite their long resistance to union, many Islanders celebrated the day. Buildings throughout Charlottetown were decorated with flags, bunting and streamers; even the ships in the harbour were festooned with ribbons. At noon there was a brief ceremony at the Colonial building, where the union proclamation was read, and the crowd sang the national anthem. Islanders still retained a strong sense of independence.... When Lord Dufferin visited Charlottetown later that month, he was so impressed by the Islanders' lingering sense of independence, he reported he was "under the impression that it is the Dominion that has been annexed to Prince Edward Island."

The Prince Edward Island badge according to Admiralty and Colonial Office papers, was not approved for use on a flag until 1878. There was a design, with a slightly off-centre crown between the two trees, that made it into print, but probably not into cloth. There was ... a suggestion that the garland on the Lt. Governor's. version of the flag, should be rose leaves with pink roses, but that was rejected.

Prince Edward Island was originally inhabited by the Mi'kmaq people. They named the island Abegweit, meaning Land Cradled on the Waves. They believed that the island was formed by the Great Spirit placing some dark red clay which was shaped as a crescent on the Blue Waters.
