The Prime Minister's political career began when he was appointed a member of the Barbados Senate in 1983. He became a Member of Parliament in 1984 and was appointed Leader of the Opposition in 1993. He remains Chairman of the Barbados Labour Party.

However, by constitutional convention designed to maintain stability in government, the Governor General will almost always call on the leader of the party which holds the most seats in the House of Commons to form a government.[1]

There, the civil rights leader Benjamin L. Hooks showed the prime minister, Mr. Bush and Laura Bush to Room 306, where Dr. King died. The visit was so last-minute that Mr. Hooks was at a dental appointment Friday morning when he received a phone call from the White House, asking him to serve as guide.
