Steps have been taken by the vaccine manufacturer and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in an attempt to prevent healthcare providers from running out of Prevnar® vaccine. These steps have worked so far, but more needs to be done.

Three quarters of the pediatricians and family doctors contacted for the survey said they were recommending Prevnar for their youngest patients, as endorsed by the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics in June, 2000. But the rest were not. The biggest factor causing some to refrain from recommending it, and others to have reservations about doing so, was cost.

Some think Prevnar might be destined to be like flu shots that must be periodically updated to reflect new strains causing illness. But each tweak requires new safety studies and more expense.
