Prevnar works by exposing your child to a small dose of the bacteria or a protein from the bacteria, which causes the body to develop immunity to the disease. Prevnar will not treat an active infection that has already developed in the body.

Effective 9/25/04, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals will charge $326 for a 5 dose package (an increase of $5 per dose) of Prevnar (CPT 90669 pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, for children under 5 years, for intramuscular use). Members are advised to review their contracts with insurers to determine coverage for this price increase and to work with their AAP chapters to notify their local carriers.

While supplies are low, your healthcare provider has been asked to wait to give most children their 3rd and 4th doses of Prevnar® vaccine. Children whose 3rd or 4th dose is delayed should receive it on their first doctor's visit after supplies return to normal.

Serum antibodies were measured one month after the third dose of routine vaccines (Pediarix, Prevnar and ActHIB).
