Prevnar is given in a series of shots. The first shot is usually given when the child is 2 months old. The booster shots are then given at 4 months, 6 months, and 12 to 15 months of age.

Recent studies have ... found that strains of pneumococci not covered by Prevnar multiply in the noses and throats of children after they are given the vaccine. Although Prevnar reduces the amount of the seven strains it covers, other strains completely fill in the gap -- so the total amount of pneumococcus found in children's noses and throats is not reduced by vaccination.

The lawsuit alleged false claims were made to the government from 2000 through 2005 in connection with the manufacture of Prevnar, a vaccine given to children to prevent meningitis and other infections. Prevnar had $2.4 billion in sales in 2007.

Others with high enough incomes could pay for it themselves, though some doctors in the survey described their system of having parents verify up front that they could pay.
