Pretty Baby is Daniel Harville (guitars), Dave Karnes (drums) and Zayra (vocals). The power trio from Fort Worth formed in early 2007. As described by the Fort Worth Weekly, the music is decidedly weird but in a good, brave way: a lot of heavy beats juxtaposed with Zayra relentlessly feminine, crystalline, sing-talky vocals, plus some ominous, hip-hop-inflected industrial music and bursts of arena-rock. Pretty Baby is currently touring and working on their first release.

Pretty Baby is on view to the public at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth from February 25 through May 27, 2007. The exhibition is organized by Curator Andrea Karnes and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Special exhibitions are included in general Museum admission: $8 for adults; $4 for seniors (60+) and students with identification; free for children 12 and under; free for Modern members.

Pretty Baby presents an international selection of artists investigating the matter of childhood directly, fantastically and critically. One encounters various manifestations of theme, ranging from record to revelry, and culminating in challenging expositions in the guise of fractured fairy tales, nontraditional families, violent acts and physical anomalies. Curator Andrea Karnes states, “Today’s images of children seldom depict innocence without irony. Artists in this exhibition share a willingness to acknowledge the complex nature of the child, and in doing so they overturn well-established constructs of childhood innocence.” The number of contemporary artists exploring manifestations of childhood over the past decade reveals the resonance of this idea, due to both its universality and ineffability.

Pretty Baby is an old song written by Tony Jackson during the Ragtime era. The song was remembered as being prominent in Jackson's repertory before he left New Orleans in 1912, but was not published until 1916.
