Securing the Presidential Debates would reinforce Belmont University’s mission “to engage and transform the world” and signal its growing presence on the national scene. Following six years of academic growth, the past year has seen Belmont rise in the U.S. News & World Report standings to No. 10; voted Nashville’s best MBA program by Nashville Scene readers while the Mike Curb College of Entertainment & Music Business was cited by Rolling Stone and Time magazines as one of the best in the country; watched the men and women’s basketball teams compete in the NCAA Tournaments; celebrated one of its own recent alumni as Miss USA (Rachel Smith, ’06); and one of its alumni came close to capturing the American Idol prize (Melinda Doolittle, ’99).

Despite the closeness of Campaign 2000, most voters express only moderate interest in viewing the upcoming presidential debates. Polls taken in advance of the debates in 1988 and 1984 ... found broader enthusiasm than the current survey.

In 1986, the Republican and Democratic National Committees agreed for the “parties to take over the presidential debates” and subsequently created the CPD, headed by each party’s national chairman, the report said. They “seized control of the debates from the genuinely nonpartisan League of Women Voters,” it said.

Since the debacle of the 2004 vice presidential debates in which Vice President Cheney acknowledged ignorance of the epidemic’s intensity among Black women the White House has become adept at mouthing the rhetoric of the struggle against AIDS. But the gap between those words and its actions has grown so large that what once sounded hopeful now carries the sting of mockery.

In recent weeks, Republican presidential candidates have found time in their busy schedules to speak or debate before the Republican Jewish Coalition, “Value Voters,” conservative Floridians, even Wyoming Republicans, who hold virtually no sway in the primary race. They’ve ... agreed to appear at the CNN/YouTube debate they at one point shunned.
