Presidential Debates: Questions
built 155 days ago
Presidential debates were reintroduced for the first time since the 1960 election. While Ford was seen as the winner of the first debate, during the second debate he inexplicably blundered when he stated, "There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe and there never will be under a Ford Administration." Ford ... said that he did not "believe that the Poles consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union."[45] In an interview years later, Ford said he had intended to imply that the Soviets would never crush the spirits of eastern Europeans seeking independence. However, the phrasing was so awkward that questioner Max Frankel was visibly incredulous at the response.[46]

Calling it the “first-ever voter-generated presidential debates,” CNN announced today it will host two debates that will feature video questions submitted by users through YouTube. Select YouTube users will ... be part of the audience. After the debate, the questions will be edited together with the answers and posted on YouTube. “For the first time in the history of presidential debates, voters from around the country will be able to ask the future president of the United States a question in video form and hear the answer,” said YouTube CEO Chad Hurley. The debates — which are scheduled for July 23rd and September 17th — will also be streamed live and archived on CNN.com. YouTube users can start submitting questions today right here.

Schroeder explores the shorter, but no less fascinating, history of presidential debates--how they have affected campaigns and news coverage of the election process. The first televised debate, in 1960 between Richard Nixon and John Kennedy, set the precedent for such debates, the role-playing and posing that goes into the drama behind the scenes as well as in front of the cameras. Schroeder's book is organized to parallel a television show: preproduction, production, and postproduction. This is a backstage look at the stars and their supporting casts of advisors, and the lesser cast members of moderators and questioners, in this examination of the merger of television and politics.

Presidential debates are simply too important to be left as they are today. The dumbed-down questions, protective formats and third-party exclusion must be addressed before debates become joint advertisements for the two major parties.

Friday's presidential debate gave viewers a look at electoral politics in action. Millions of Americans tuned in to the second of three debates with plans to support their favorite or with hopes to choose one. But interested Americans hardly received a candid debate. Both candidates answered questions from ordinary citizens in a town-hall-meeting-styled debate. The questions, though unknown to the candidates beforehand, provoked scripted answers based solely on each party's talking points. Multiple times during the 90-minute debate, the periods of time allotted for answering questions were often utilized to rebut the other candidate's previous answer.
