President Abraham Lincoln: North America
built 212 days ago
For 12 days, John Wilkes Booth, the man who assassinated Abraham Lincoln and engineered a handful of attacks on other government officials, evaded the greatest manhunt in history. Ten thousand federal troops were assembled to track down Booth and his co-conspirator, David Herold. This follows the hunt for Booth - across the 11th Street Bridge, through the Maryland countryside, across the Potomac River, and finally to where Booth was gunned down inside a burning tobacco barn in northern Virginia. The story is one that strongly resonates today as most historians consider the Lincoln conspiracy and the hunt for Booth to be the unraveling of the first terrorist plot against the American government.
On the evening of April 14, 1865, while attending a special performance of the comedy, "Our American Cousin," President Abraham Lincoln was shot. Accompanying him at Ford's Theater that night were his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, a twenty-eight year-old officer named Major Henry R. Rathbone, and Rathbone's fiancee, Clara Harris. After the play was in progress, a figure with a drawn derringer pistol stepped into the presidential box, aimed, and fired. The president slumped forward.
Harold Holzer, Gabor S. Boritt, and Mark E. Neely, Jr., The Lincoln Image: Abraham Lincoln and the Popular Print (New York, 1984), is the only account of the shaping of Lincoln's image through etchings and lithographs, 1860–1865. Philip B. Kunhardt, Jr., Philip B. Kunhardt III, and Peter W. Kunhardt, Lincoln: An Illustrated Biography (New York, 1992), is the best pictorial history. James Mellon, ed., The Face of Lincoln (New York, 1979), is the finest work on Lincoln photographs. Merrill D. Peterson, Lincoln in American Memory (New York, 1994), goes beyond historiography to provide a readable appraisal of Lincoln's role in American culture over the past century and more.
President Lincoln's grave is not very hard to find. It towers over the whole cementry. There are signs pointing the way to the grave and other Lincoln sites in Springfield. The best way to get to the cementry is by taking 55 north to sixth st. up to the cementry. There are signs that point the way. President Lincoln's Presidental Library is to open a year from this November.

The first photograph ever taken of Abraham Lincoln, a daguerreotype taken by Shepherd in 1846. Throughout the election, Lincoln did not campaign or give speeches. This was handled by the state and county Republican organizations, who used the latest techniques to sustain party enthusiasm and ... obtain high turnout. There was little effort to convert non-Republicans, and there was virtually no campaigning in the South except for a few border cities such as St. Louis, Missouri, and Wheeling, Virginia; indeed, the party did not even run a slate in most of the South. In the North, there were thousands of Republican speakers, tons of campaign posters and leaflets, and thousands of newspaper editorials. These focused first on the party platform, and second on Lincoln's life story, making the most of his boyhood poverty, his pioneer background, his native genius, and his rise from obscurity. His nicknames, "Honest Abe" and "the Rail-Splitter," were exploited to the full.
Legend says that Abraham Lincoln was born in North Carolina and not Kentucky. According to this story, Nancy Hanks was placed in the home of Abraham Enloe which was located in Rutherford County by her poverty stricken mother. Nancy was raised by the Enloe family. In 1808, Nancy got pregnant by Abraham Enloe. Nancy had a baby boy and named him Abraham after his father. To avoid further scandal, Abraham Enloe asked Tom Lincoln to marry Nancy. Tom married Nancy and moved to Kentucky.
