President Abraham Lincoln: Mexican War
built 113 days ago
Did you know that Lincoln stopped a war from happening? Captain Charles Wilkes stopped a British ship and took two confederate men. The men were Mason & Slidell. The confederacy had sent them to Britain to ask for aid in the war. The British were angry, but Lincoln apologized and gave the men back. Those two men almost started a second war with Britain, isn't that amazing!
Lincoln in 1846 or 1847 During the Civil War, Lincoln held powers no previous president had wielded; he suspended the writ of habeas corpus and frequently imprisoned Southern spies and sympathizers without trial. On the other hand, he often commuted executions.

Throughout the war, Lincoln showed a keen curiosity with the military campaigns. He spent hours at the War Department telegraph office, reading dispatches from his generals. He visited battle sites frequently, and seemed fascinated by watching scenes of war. During Jubal Anderson Early's raid on Washington, D.C. in 1864, Lincoln had to be told to duck to avoid being shot while observing the battle.
The marble sarcophagus was erected over the location of President Lincoln's body. On the curving rear wall of the mausoleum are the words of Secretary of War Stanton: "NOW HE BELONGS TO THE AGES."
