Preschool education is the provision of education for children before the commencement of statutory education, usually between the ages of two and five, dependent on the jurisdiction. Preschool is ... known as nursery school, day care or kindergarten (other than in the USA, where kindergarten is part of the statutory education system, preceding first grade).
Preschool Preschool usually involves lots of arts and crafts projects that require concentration and the ability to focus on an individual task. If your child likes to draw at home or gets engrossed in puzzles and other activities on her own, she's a good candidate for preschool. But even if she's the kind of child who asks for help with everything, you can start getting her ready by setting up playtimes where she can entertain herself for a half hour or so. While you wash the dishes, encourage her to make creatures out of clay, for example. Gradually build up to longer stretches of solo play. Your goal here is to keep yourself moderately preoccupied with an activity so that she'll get on with her own without too much hand-holding from you.
Preschool is generally considered appropriate for children between three and five years of age, between the toddler and school stages. During this stage of development, children learn and assimilate information rapidly, and express interest and fascination in each new discovery. These qualities make them prime candidates for education, although most are not ready for structured primary or elementary education.
"Preschool education is often overlooked in the broader debate about education," said James E. Rohr, chairman and chief executive officer of PNC, which is taking a leadership role in the private sector with its PNC Grow Up Great initiative. "Significant research over the past 40 years... supports the critical importance of equal access to quality preschool programs to reduce dropout rates, poverty and crime. And, at the same time, improve job skills and the labor pool."
Preschool education programs play an increasingly vital role in child development and school readiness, said Barnett. Early learning's impacts persist across children's life spans, affecting educational achievement, earnings, health, and even crime and delinquency.
